As part of the 2025 Women in Sport week, Weightlifting Ireland and Northern Ireland Weightlifting came together to host the Ulster Barbells and Brunch event. The two Federations, with other events held in Ennis and Dublin, recognised the WIS pillars of active participation and coaching, with the aim of highlighting and strengthening our strong female community.
Clubs from all over NI were represented, Asylum, Mid Ulster, Avenge Fianna, Scrabo strength, Three White Lights, along with friends from Capital Strength in Dublin. The event was the perfect opportunity to meet, engage and connect with female athletes and coaches in a fun, supportive and non-competitive environment (though there are some fierce ‘sticks’ opponents!). We also had some ladies who have never attended a weightlifting event and one returning from a long hiatus!
Rosie McCann and Claire McLarnon led the session, delivering a group warm up and technical support of the Olympic lifts. Strong females build each other up and the support within the group was evident – positive vibes, good music, high energy and great lifting! A great morning was topped off with more interactions and a fantastic brunch!
